Just in the progress of putting a new clutch in LJH. A friend has let me use one of his lifts at his garage.
New rear oil seal in and new clutch are in. Gearbox back in and new clutch slave fitted.
Re greased drive shafts and fitted new cv boots. Decided to do the tabs while I had access to a lift.
Got one TAB out late this afternoon. Check the pic
If you haven't checked yours I would suggest you do.
This was seized as well as bent.

Another sweltering day in the garage. Fitted new TAB, bush and support plate on passenger side.
Found the driver side TAB also seized and bent. This time it was not coming out of the trailing arm.
Eventually using a long breaker bar the bolt sheared.  Sad
I then had to remove the trailing arm and tried a 10 ton press to remove the remains of the bolt. That did not work so I ended up drilling the bolt out on a drill press.
Sorry no photos as I was on a time constraint to finish by tonight.
Fitted new TAB, bush and support plate.

Re installed under trays and bled brakes and clutch. Much amusement from the guys in the workshop on the position i had to get in to reach clutch bleed point!

New clutch seems awesome...very smooth. In fact I don't think it's ever been this good. Smile
All in all a good three days work.

Great work Nick, It's a job that needs doing if the original TABs are still in there. I will do this job when I do a frame off with 6237

Thanks Stuart. I'd guess the TABs on 2862 have not been touched since the 80's if ever.
However the gearbox has been out before as it was missing one of the "don't bother refitting metal plates".

A couple of nice side benefits of carrying out these jobs is my garage floor no longer gets covered in oil!
And replacing the TAB support plates with nice shiny stainless items from the States and cleaning and renewing all the hardware has done wonders for the cars electrical system. (Earth point is on passenger side support plate). The voltmeter no longer takes a massive dive when the fans kick in or the aircon is on. Smile
That's going to get even better as I have a set of DMCH new low draw fans and a Special T 120 amp alternator to fit when I get some more time.

I found the same when I replaced/added the new earth cables that SpecialT auto sell.

Weekend update

Got a few jobs done over the weekend.
1) Replaced driver's side front wheel bearing.
2) Cleaned and degreased engine bay. Did a bit of detailing so I might actually show the engine to someone   Wink
3) Changed gearbox oil. Got hold of a natty little pump on eBay that screws into the top of standard oil containers. I was able to use it on a 5 litre can. Worked a treat and made changing the oil easy.

I think the next job on the list is to fit a new Special T fuel pump. This does away with all the stuff in the tank. Modern intergrated pump. I'll take the time and take photos of the install of this.

I'm not sure if he has changed the pictures description on the instuctions since I installed this, however I did email him some revised ones re the pump positioning, I will see if I can dig them out.

Yehh they are the new instructions and pictures of how to position the pump. The first instructions had the pump inlet/outlet pointing forward, this stopped the cover fitting on some cars. A simple revision and longer fuel pipes enabled it to be fitted this way. Some more pics hear:
mmmm, interesting wont allow me to insert a link! if you have a look at dmc today you find it

Cheers Chris, I read the info on DMC today. Glad to see you have the same pump and
have had no problems.

Even though I have been through the fuel system in the past. New pick up hose,
filter etc. I have had problems when the fuel tank gets hot on long trips.
Decided to try the new style pump and see if that sorts the problem.

Nice work there Nick, I remember my TAB's on Flopsy were bent when Martin took them out for me, I remember him test driving the car after we'd done the engine back in 2003, and the back end getting very lairy due to the TAB's being knackered. I had some of his Inconel 410 ones fitted, and its been great ever since.
My car is also weeping oil at the rear main seal, but as I'm changing the engine, its immaterial now.

Thanks Claire, How goes the replacement engine search?

Renewed the outer door seals with silicon versions this week. They were shot 17 years ago when I bought the car!  Rolleyes  Low on the priority list......  Wink

Hope to swap the fuel pump tomorrow. I think I might go to a car show on Sunday haven't been to one  in ages.

[attachment=235]Changed the fuel pump on Saturday. Made some interesting discoveries. Bear in mind a number of the components have been replaced by me in the past. When I first got the car the lower part of the baffle was missing. As was the filter and the pick up hose was a mess and replaced along with the cover boot.

I did the stainless tig wire trick to make a spring inside the new pick up hose however it still managed to kink see the photo. Also check the muck on the filter. I cleaned out the tank before fitting the new pump but it was pretty good. Most of the muck was on the filter. The support boot was on its way out as the rubber has started to turn sticky.

New pump fitted. As Chris mentioned the supplied hose should route as per the instructions however the ones I was supplied were to short to route that way. I creativity used a cable tie to help avoid kinking the hose. This is a temporary fix and I'll have to get some longer hoses.

So looks like my issue was the standard fuel gets hot and hose collapses.
Maybe the fuel heating is a way of aiding cooling from the car, sort of a design feature like the SR-71 uses  Big Grin Blush

Anyway this problem is now sorted and car runs great with the modern style pump.

it looks a neat set up. It would be nice to get some feedback on how it performs in the medium term.
